Reducing our impact on the environment - our commitment
Manx Telecom is committed to the prevention of pollution and
minimising the impact of its operations on the environment. This
will be achieved through a programme of continual improvement.
Whilst it is obvious that we live in an age where fast and
reliable communications are vital in both our social and business
dealings, we are always aware that the technology to facilitate
this must be sensitively deployed on an island of such great scenic
beauty.
We have invested over £50 million in the network infrastructure
and we always consider the environmental case when we are planning
new installations. Over the last twenty years we have buried
hundreds of kilometres of overhead telephone cables underground
and, wherever possible, we will always put new cabling in the
ground.
Looking after our Island
Manx Telecom has a strong and sustained commitment to the
positive protection and minimization of its impact on the Isle of
Man environment. In 2004 we became one of the few companies on the
Island to gain independent accreditation to the internationally
recognised ISO14001:2004 environmental management standard for all
its operations across the company.
In 2007 we confirmed this commitment with a full reassessment of
our systems and achieved accreditation for a further three years.
Each year we set objectives to improve our
environmental aspects including energy, emissions to air, waste,
local impact, products and procurement.
We introduced the first mobile phone recycling initiative on the
Isle of Man and continue to provide the facility, with money raised
being channelled back into environmental projects.
