Alternative Style Sheets

The default syle sheet used with the website conatins many standard accessibility features.

To assist users we have provided an additional predefined text only style sheet which uses high contrast text colours against a black background. Switch to text only Mode

If you have specific requirements not catered for  by this alternative style sheet then we recommend that you use a Browser such as Opera that enables users to define their own style sheets for viewing content. This website has been tested and supports using user defined style sheets.

Screen Reader Support

Screen Reading software  such as HAL or JAWS enable visually impaired users to naviagate webpages and have the text content read aloud by a speech synthesiser or output through a braille display.

Visitors using recent versions of screen readers can navigate using the following keystrokes:

  • H to cycle forwards through the headings
  • Shift + H to cycle backwards through the headings
  • 1 to navigate to the next level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the next heading on this level)
  • Shift + 1 to navigate to the previous level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the previous heading on this level)
  • INSERT + F6 to provide a list of all headings.

Magnifying Text Size

Modern browsers allow users to increase the font size of text or have a screen magnifier to zoom in or out. 

The site has been tested with the most popular screen magnifiers and works with modified text sizes, to ensure the best experince on this and any other website we recommend using a screen magnifier.

  • CTRL + + (PLUS BUTTON) to Zoom in
  • CTRL + - (MINUS BUTTON)  to Zoom out.
  • CTRL + 0 to reset to default magnification

The pages on this website have been designed and tested to comply with a minimum standard of WCAG AA, complying with all priority 1 and 2 guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

  • All pages on this site validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict.
  • All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. H1 tags are used for main titles, H2, and H3 tags for subtitles.

Navigation aids

The menu system conaitins a visual indictaion at all times breadcrumb navigation system and selective quick links boxes are provided to jump to popular pages.

All pages on the website include a search box, and advanced search options are available on the advanced search page.

Navigating without a mouse

The site navigation has been enabled to allow browsing using a keyboard alone.  The keys used to naviagate vary between browsers, for assistance we have listed the most common browsers.

Internet Explorer

  • TAB, Move forward through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, or the Links bar.
  • SHIFT+TAB, Move back through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, or the Links bar. ALT+RIGHT ARROW ,Go to the next page.
  • ALT+LEFT ARROW or BACKSPACE, Go to the previous page.
  • SHIFT+ F10, Display a shortcut menu for a link. 
  • CTRL+W or ALT+F4  Close the current window (if you only have one tab open). 
  • ENTER,  Activate a selected link.

 

Firefox / Mozilla / Netscape

  1. TAB, Move forward through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, or the Links bar.
  2. SHIFT+TAB, Move back through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, or the Links bar.
  3. ALT+LEFT ARROW or BACKSPACE (Windows), Go to the previous page.

  5. F7 Caret Browsing 
    CTRL+W or ALT+F4  Close the current tab or  window if you only have one tab open.

Opera

  • SHIFT+LEFT, SHIFT+Right, SHIFT+Up, and SHIFT+Down select the next link or form input in that direction.
  • Enter activates links or form inputs. SHIFT+Enter opens a link in a new tab.
  • Z and ALT+Left go back in history. X and ALT+Right go forward.
  • F5 and CTRL+R reload the current page.
  • F8 focuses the address field. F9 focuses the page.
  • CTRL+T opens a new tab.
  • CTRL+Tab cycles through the list of open tabs.
  • CTRL+W closes the current tab.
