Island-wide Broadband Boost
15 January 2009
Manx Telecom recently completed a major
upgrade to the Island’s telecommunications network which means that
the company’s 21,000 broadband users will now be able to take
advantage of download speeds of up to 8Mb/s (8 Megabits per
second). The upgrade is part of Manx Telecom’s £25 million
Next Generation Network project which will ultimately enable
personal and business customers to access and manipulate voice
calls, data, television, and video, on one seamless ‘converged’
network.
“The upgrade to 8Mb/s is great news for our
broadband customers,” said Andy Bridson, Sales and Marketing
Director. “Most individuals and businesses should find that
their download speeds are now faster, making their online
experience quicker and easier. The amount of material
available for download is growing by quantum leaps as more and more
people take advantage of the digital revolution to access
information and entertainment, and this latest upgrade to our
network will enable Manx Telecom customers to get the best out of
the Internet.”
Manx Telecom stressed that the actual speed an
individual customer may get will get depend on a number of factors,
such as how near they are to an exchange, the wiring in their
house, and the equipment they have. Broadband users can get
information and advice about their connection by contacting their
Internet Service Provider. Manx Telecom also offers a range
of help and advice about getting the best from broadband; customers
can ring 624 624, or visit www.manx.net.
Implementing the Next Generation Network,
which will take place throughout 2009, will mean migrating more
than 60,000 fixed lines, and nearly 230,000 mobile customers, to
the new digital platform. The Next Generation Network
represents one of the biggest investments in technology the Island
has ever seen and, when complete, the Island will be the first
country in the world to have everything running off one secure
converged Telecoms network.
“We can’t be a world class country without
world class communications technology, and we are confident that
the Next Generation Network will play a key role in keeping the
Island ahead of the game,” said Andy Bridson.
