The aim of this information is to offer advice on how to keep data roaming charges to a minimum.

We have roaming agreements in over 200 destinations around the world enabling customers to make and receive voice calls and texts when roaming outside of their home network.

We also have data agreements with over 100 operators world wide ensuring that you can access the internet and email when travelling.

iPhone hints and tips

Before your trip...

  • Please remember data roaming does not form part of any inclusive data provided as part of our Pay Monthly tariffs or data bolt-ons.
  • Check there is a roaming agreement with your destination.
  • Check which operator has the lowest data charges.

During your trip...

  • Be aware of which operator’s network you’ve roamed onto and check their data charges.
  • Use Wi-Fi networks where possible. Most major airports and hotels usually have Wi-Fi availability.

If you only need to text or call...

  • Switch off your email account from your iPhone. Go to Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars Select Your account > Account off.
  • Switch off ‘data when roaming’ in your network settings. Go to Settings > General > Network Select Data Roaming off.
  • Please note that switching off the ’data when roaming’ feature will only work when you are outside of the UK.
  • Customers who do not wish to incur data roaming charges when in the UK should switch off email accounts and remove the Access Point Name (APN) as services such as Facebook, Twitter etc may try to auto-update. To remove the APN on the iPhone:
Select Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > APN. Delete the information in the field and save. To re-apply the APN follow the same command and enter ‘3gpronto’ in the APN field and save.
