Setting Up Your Router
Most routers follow the same basic configuration process. Once
all your cables are correctly plugged, you power on your router and
connect to it via your Internet Browser.
Once you are logged in to your router you can enter your
Broadband Username and Password, configure your Wireless Security
settings and the Router access password.
Compatability
You should ensure that your new router is ADSL2+ compatible to
enable you to take full advantage of the higher speeds that are
available with ADSL2+ services.
ADSL2+ provides speeds of up to 16Mbps downstream and up to
832Kbps upstream.
A basic router configuration should look like this:

When our engineer contacts you to advise that Broadband is ready
they will tell you to plug in your filters and install your router.
The above diagram above shows the correct method of installation
for a telephone socket that is used by both a telephone and the
router.
You need a filter in every socket that is in use.
Configuration Issues
It is important that you follow the instructions
supplied with your modem/router carefully. If you
experience problems with the installation process and getting
connected for the first time, then you should contact the modem
manufacturer in the first instance.
We have also created configuration guides to assist in setting
up your router if the manufacturers installation is unsuccessful.
Please see the document download section below. These docuements
should not be used in place of your manufacturers instructions, but
as an indicative guide if you are having problems.
Further Information
As a router is designed to always be connected to the Internet
it is helpful to note, particularly when troubleshooting
problems, that there are two 'stages' of connection:
- Your computer to your router.
- Your router to the Internet.
If you have a problem viewing websites or retreiving your email
you should check that your router is connected to the Internet.
Most routers will re-connect automatically but a common cause of
Internet problems is that the router has lost its connection. This
can be the case even if you see a message on your computer saying
"Connected to Wireless Connection at 54Mbps" - for example.
Your computer can connect to the router even if the router is
not connected to the Internet. This can cause confusion for
some users who think that this message means they are connected to
the Internet.
To check if your router is connected you should consult your
router documentation and follow the specific instructions for your
router.
For information: you should be able to log in to your router by
opening an Internet Browser and entering one of the addresses
below.
http://192.168.0.1/ (Netgear)
http://192.168.1.1/ (BT Voyager)
You may be asked for a username and password to log on to your
router. By default these should be:
Username: admin
Password: password
Manx Telecom does not keep a record of these details so you
should contact your router manufacturer for assistance if you
cannot log in to your router.
