Mobile Number Portability
How to identify a Manx Telecom Mobile
We will be changing the ring tone that our customers experience
when calling Manx Telecom mobiles. This unique ring tone clearly
differentiates calls to Manx Telecom mobiles from calls to local
landlines and other mobile operators. With the introduction of
Mobile Number Portability on the 29th June 2009, it will no longer
be possible to assume from the first digit of a six digit local
mobile number whether this number is terminated on our network or
Sure Isle of Man. We are introducing the new ring tone so that our
customers will be aware that the calls they make to local mobile
numbers may be charged differently. For example, some Manx Telecom
tariffs offer inclusive unlimited minutes to other Manx Telecom
mobiles; whenever customers hear the new tone they will know the
call is to another Manx Telecom mobile customer and therefore
free.
The new ring tone
Our customers will hear a new unique ring tone when they call
other Manx Telecom mobile customers. The ring tone is different to
the one currently used through the insertion of two 'beeps' every
second cycle of the tone. You can listen to the existing tone and
the new ring tone by clicking the links below:
This change enables all Manx Telecom customers to know when they
are calling another Manx Telecom customer, even if they are calling
a previously recognizable Sure Isle of Man mobile number which may
have been ported into the Manx Telecom network.
When will the new ring tone be introduced?
The new ring tone was introduced on the 29th June 2009.
Will I always hear the new ring tone when calling a Manx
Telecom mobile?
There are two instances when you will not hear the new ring tone
when calling a Manx Telecom mobile:
- If the called mobile number is roaming then the ring tone you
will hear will come from the country which the person is
visiting.
- If the called mobile number has been diverted to another
number, other than a Manx Telecom mobile, including Voicemail
What about text messages?
Text messages are unaffected. There is no technical way of
notifying a customer whether the text message they are sending is
to another Manx Telecom mobile or that of another service
provider.
