Conference visit part of Manx Telecom’s drive to enhance roaming products

Manx Telecom was represented at the recent GSMA WAS#7 conference in Dubai, an event where mobile operators from around the world gather to share and discuss the latest industry news, network, and vote on future developments in mobile roaming. Attending the event was part of the company’s ongoing strategy to improve roaming for its contract and pay as you go mobile customers.

GSMA (Global Solutions for Mobile Association) is the organisation which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting nearly 800 operators with more than 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem. WAS is the Wholesale Agreements and Solutions Group within GSMA which helps mobile operators and associated service providers to work together.

Manx Telecom was represented at the conference by Roaming Manager, Jannie van Niekerk. He commented: “Attending events such as GSMA WAS#7 is a vital part of our drive to secure more roaming agreements, and better value, so that we can pass on the benefits to our mobile customers. This type of event is ideal for meeting existing and new suppliers, negotiating new agreements, and prioritising test slots for roaming coverage with our roaming partners. All of this work underpins the success of our mobile products. In recent years we have significantly increased the number of roaming agreements we have, and this has enabled the launch of new products such as Smartroam and SmartCorp, for consumers and businesses respectively. When we launched Smartroam last year we were the first Isle of Man operator to offer pay monthly customers inclusive roaming within the UK and EU. We now have more than 10,000 Smartroam customers, and its launch and success was only made possible by an extensive project which involved making a significant investment in IT systems, conducting a massive amount of research to create a detailed understanding of our customers’ data and call usage internationally and, most importantly, negotiating international roaming agreements.”

Today, Manx Telecom has 405 roaming agreements with mobile operators as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to provide great value roaming in destinations that are most popular with Isle of Man residents travelling for business or pleasure.
