• June: Manx Telecom was acquired by HgCapital, a leading European private equity investor, and CPS Partners, a specialist international telecommunications management company.

  • We continued to work in partnership with ex-owners o2, and signed a groundbreaking Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partnership with them as part of our drive to grow business off Island.  The multi-million pound agreement provided services for international customers travelling into the UK, enabling them to purchase pre-paid SIM cards offering competitive in-country rates.

  • May: We upgraded our connectivity between the island and the rest of the world to provide higher capacity and even more resilience. The new network provided up to 10 Gbps capacity for multi-media, voice and data communications via a range of Leased Line, Ethernet and Multi-Point Labelled Switching (MPLS) services. We also increased our Points of Presence to include Manchester, Dublin and Belfast as well as London and the Isle of Man.

  • October: We announced our ultrafast broadband service based on Very High Bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) technology, with dedicated infrastructure installed at each exchange on the island at a cost of some £500k. The new service, called “Ultima”, offered download speeds of up to 40 Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 2Mbit/s to two-thirds of the island.

  • October: We invested £500k in a new flagship retail store in Strand Street in the heart of Douglas to great acclaim.

  • October: We teamed up with Alcatel-Lucent to trial 4G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, demonstrating speeds of up to 55Mbit/s download and up to 18Mbit/s upload.

  • February: We partnered with former BBC and ITV news presenter Paul Moulton in launching MTTV, the Island’s first dedicated HD online news channel, subsequently achieving over 1 million views.

  • March: We launched “Intelligent Cloud”, a hosted cloud solution allowing businesses of all sizes to host their IT applications in a safe and secure hosting environment.

  • During the latter part of the year we successfully ran trials of Fibre to the Home (FTTH) technology which provides incredible download speeds; as high as 100 Mbps downstream, via a dedicated fibre optic cable to the home.

  • August: We announced the completion of our largest managed services contract with the Isle of Man Post Office. The contract centred on the provision of a suite of services including fixed line telephony, internet, wide area and local area network management, and IT service support provided through a dedicated managed services platform. It supports a workforce of 450 Post Office staff and 32 separate locations across the Island, making it one of the biggest deployments of its kind on the Isle of Man.

  • October: We launched over 30 free WiFi hotspots around the Island in coffee shops, cafés, pubs, and many other locations. The hotspots are free for all Manx Telecom mobile and broadband customers.

  • October: We also started work on a £10 million investment in a new three phase purpose-built data centre. Phase one of the Greenhill Data Centre is scheduled to be open for business in 2014.

  • November: We announced a partnership with leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider Huawei to deliver a 4G (LTE) mobile broadband network in 2014.

  • Late in the year, we completed our Next Generation Network (NGN), a £25 million programme to replace the entire, fixed, mobile, and broadband network with an Internet Protocol (IP) based system.
