2.4GHz or 5GHz Wireless

Many DSL routers now come with a feature called "Dual Band" WiFi which means that the router can broadcast your WiFi signal on two different frequencies; 2.4 Gigahertz (GHz) and 5Ghz.

Which one is best for me?

The main difference between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies is range, with 2.4GHz being able to reach further than 5GHz.

You may think that 2.4GHz is the simple choice then as it provides greater range but there are other factors to consider. If you simply need the greatest coverage then you should choose 2.4GHz.

However, another important difference is the number of devices on each frequency, this does not just mean the number of computers or tablets you have but other devices can use these spectrums. 2.4GHz suffers greater interference than 5GHz.

Microwave ovens and cordless phones can use 2.4GHz which can add noise to the spectrum which can affect your wireless speed.

2.4GHz also has fewer channel options compared to 5GHz, with fewer channels available, the chances of utilising a channel with no other WiFi networks is significantly reduced.

To summarise:

5GHz does not broadcast as far as 2.4GHz but unless you have a large property you probably won't notice the difference. If you need your WiFi signal to reach multiple floors in your property you should investigate WiFi Repeaters or our range of Homeplug adaptors on our Online Shop.

2.4GHz is a busier spectrum and therefore devices will suffer increased interference compared to 5GHz

We would recommend that, if your router supports 5GHz and WiFi signal stability over range is your priority, you choose this option.
